Work From Home Never Ends!

It has been more than a year since the pandemic started and made us see things we never expected to see. Several lifestyle changes occurred in terms of education, occupation, fashion, and even food choices however one of the prominent changes was the transition of industries to an online platform for their functions and operations to continue amidst the spread of the fatal virus.

While most of us sighed in relief by getting rid of troubles of commuting in traffic or expenses of fuels or simply by the erasure of a workplace environment from our life, that wasn't the case with several others. Working from home didn't end up being the utopian life employees expected it to be. What everyone expected to pass away in comfort and without any worry soon became something that never ended and stepped beyond the boundaries of working hours encompassing their personal life drastically.

What exactly leads to this?

The sudden shift and change in the medium of execution of an organization's functions and operations left the employees to tackle such problems. Lack of basic technical knowledge and practical application of the same was one of the biggest challenges which made employees stress over it more. Lack of trust and control of the organization over their employees because of the dissolution of the boundaries of a workplace led to employees taking their responsibility for granted.

Lack of superiors and their constant supervision, dress code, no time management because of no commuting and in-office environment eventually got instilled in the minds of the employees making them excited but also lethargic towards their responsibilities. All such problems along with constant disturbance from family or toll on mental health because of social isolation can lead to work from home becoming too stressful and never-ending.

How to tackle it all?

To make the whole working from home easier for their employees, companies need to play a huge part. Companies need to ensure proper training of all the employees in terms of the practical application of the technological platforms to be utilized for employee operations as well as establish a proper structure involving meetings on routine to avoid isolation taking a toll on their employees' mental health and setting accurate deadlines to avoid employee from taking work for granted or become careless. A proper structure is bound to make people in the organization prioritize their work, making them finish their work in their working hours and not letting work-life get mixed with their personal life.

Setting reminders as personal deadlines for every task and limiting the number of tasks can help individuals to avoid getting overburdened and preserve energy instead of completely running out of it. To avoid getting interrupted by family or any other distractions at home, establish boundaries as you do at your workplace. Letting your family know the significance of your work is the best way to avoid them from bothering you. As for those living alone, they can have small breaks to stop exhausting themselves and watch a movie with friends on a streaming platform or call up friends.

Wanting to finish a week's work in a day is only going to make things difficult for you, therefore it's always better to divide your work and take on a limited number of tasks that don't exhaust you entirely. Properly organizing and managing time will make you more efficient and it will be easier for you to get done with your work in your working hours and get back to your personal life to spend time with the ones you want to.

“Most anyone can learn to be a great virtual employee. The top skills to learn are setting healthy boundaries between your work life and personal life and building relationships virtually.” - Larry English
