Position: Lab Engineer

Location: Chennai

Reporting To: Manager-Application Engineering & Lab Operations

Criteria: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Polymer, Chemical Engineering), MSc polymer Science or a related field with 8+ Years working in a chemical laboratory environment with a strong focus on analytical and mechanical testing techniques.

Job Summary: Testing & Experimentation: Ensure that all testing, experiments, and laboratory work are conducted in compliance with safety standards, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS), adhering to site safety practices, and ensuring proper use of laboratory equipment. Ensure all products and processes meet industry standards.

Skills:

Technical Expertise:

  • Extensive experience with analytical testing equipment (e.g., TMA, DSC, DMA, SEM & EDS, Rheometer, FTIR, Contact Angle Meter).

  • Proficient in mechanical testing (e.g., UTM, Die/Dot Shear, Hardness Test).

  • Strong understanding of calibration and maintenance of laboratory testing equipment.       

  • Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills: Strong ability to interpret chemical, physical, and mechanical data and solve customer complaints using systematic analysis.

Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with internal teams and customers. Ability to present complex technical information clearly.

Software Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), Lotus Notes, and Statistical Analysis Software.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lab Equipment Management: Maintain inventory of Company products, test coupons, consumables, and essential spares for analytical and mechanical testing equipment. Ensure calibration and proper functioning of instruments such as TMA, DSC, DMA, SEM & EDS, Rheometer, FTIR, Contact Angle Meter, UTM, Die/Dot Shear, and hardness testers.

  • Analytical Testing Expertise: Perform advanced analytical tests using equipment like TMA (Thermomechanical Analyzer), DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimeter), DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer), SEM & EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), Rheometer, FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), and Contact Angle Meter to determine material properties and behaviors. Analyze and interpret results to solve customer complaints and provide technical solutions.

  • Mechanical Testing: Conduct mechanical tests using UTM (Universal Testing Machine), Die/Dot Shear, and hardness testing to evaluate material strength, durability, and other mechanical properties. Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to test outcomes.

  • Test Planning & Reporting: Prepare detailed test plans and generate comprehensive test reports for internal teams and customers. Plan and organize daily and weekly tasks, ensuring that all assignments are completed efficiently and within deadlines. Ensure the documentation is clear, accurate, and adheres to Company’s reporting standards.

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as a subject matter expert in analytical and mechanical testing areas. Participate actively in team meetings, sharing insights and providing technical support to internal teams and external contacts.

  • Safety & Compliance: Implement and enforce Company’s Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) policies, including Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and environmental impact assessments. Ensure compliance with ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 standards.

  • Tracks all testing /experiments, understands testing objectives and key performance targets, and understands the Company testing process.

  • Suggest innovative problem solving in process and testing during FA analysis.

  • Maintains Inventory of Company Products, test coupons & essential equipment spares.

  • Basic Lab equipment Maintenance prepares graphs or charts of data. Must have ability to identify and report abnormalities in collected data and/or project work to supervisors

  • Incident Investigation & Reporting: Participate in the investigation of incidents/accidents and near misses, maintaining accident statistics and providing recommendations for preventive actions.

  • Training & Development: Provide technical training on safety protocols, emergency preparedness, fire safety, material handling, hazard identification, electrical safety, working at height, scaffolding, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
